Communities within and surrounding Samboja Lestari have managed to preserve some of the rainforest which is still used by wild animals and birds and also by BOS. BOS has designed and built a training forest for the orangutans it has rescued within the forest. It is here that the rescued orangutans are rehabilitated and taught a range of skills including climbimg, building nests, discovering edible and inedible foods and social interaction between one another to enable them to learn how to survive when they are released back into the wild.

Maximum biodiversity

The Arboretum, which is developing in the centre of the protected area, will add up to 5000 plant species. Thus the Arboretum of Samboja Lestari will be more species-rich than the famous botanical garden in Bogor on Java. A surface of 159 hectares retains most of the botanical wealth of Borneo. All known tree species of Borneo investigated so far will grow here. At present the Arboretum contains about 750 species.

The nursery garden of Samboja Lestari

A nursery garden of about 2 hectares lies at the heart of Samboja Lestari. There is a constant search for new plant types, which are then cultivated in the nursery garden. After all, the forest in Samboja shall be as wild and rich in species as primary forest. There are more than 750 species at the moment; many of are them serve as food for the orangutans and, when grown up, as climbing trees. But also plants with healing powers are grown in the nursery – often, the orangutans know about their effect and make use of them.

Samboja Lodge

Ecolodge, April 2006

Since the beginning of 2007 the Samboja Lodge is open to interested visitors. There are numerous single and double bedrooms as well as four luxury apartments in the lodge. The profits go back entirely to the reforestation project! The roomy lodge is financed by the Gibbon-Foundation. Visitors can take part in the realisation of the successful reforestation project or locate their square metres, the growing rainforest can be experienced very close up. Since our collective project is based on the integration and acceptance of the local population, the new jobs provided there play a very important role for the development of the sanctuary. A lot of new jobs were created: on the one hand in the lodge itself, for employees in the kitchen, laundry, reception, cleaning and security department; and on the other hand in general, due to an increasing number of tourists. Tour guides and assistants who take care of groups, drivers and mechanics, craftsmen, paramedics and many more are needed. BOS sincerely invites you to visit the Ecolodge and help on the spot with the planting and cultivation of trees!

During their stay in Samboja Lestari they evaluated the progress made on our selling areas. Big improvements are achieved. On the photos you can see how young trees and brakes are already growing higher than a standing person. salak and sugar palms

Around the area of Samboja Lestari a ring of the very spiky salak palms is going to be planted. This is to prevent the entering of the area. Furthermore the snake fruits are edible for humans and animals. Outside of the salakfence sugar palm plantations are developing as a further ring which are to be cultivated by the surrounding farmers. Beside sugar production the palms are usefull for fire prevention. They are considered to be hardly inflammable and intended as a protection ring. The palms need about 10 to 15 years until they produce sugar sap. Because of that, between the planting rows fast-growing trees are planted, which will be used as construction wood when the sugarpalms are ready for production

The herbarium in Samboja Wanariset, 12km away from Samboja Lestari works together whith the BOS Foundation, the university of Leiden/Netherlands and the botanical garden in Bogor/Java. Seeds, fruits and pieces of wood are collected and archived. If possible, the seeds are used for propagation. The seedlings also find a home in the arboretum of Samboja Lestari

In Samboja Lestari there are by now six islands with a total area of 6,5 hectares as a home for orangutans which can't be released any more. The islands are surrounded by artificial ditches. This is to prevent the escape of the orangutans, to prevent straying arround in the surrounding villages and the destruction of new planted trees. Some orangutans were injured by poachers and can't survive independently in the wild any longer.Others have been infected by humans with chronic deseases like aids or hepitits. Furthermore there are orangutans with physical or mental handicaps like trisomy 21 which can make a life in the wild impossible. Some of the orangutans were kept their whole life in cages. Sometimes they are so mentally disturbed that they can't learn the skills which are necessary for a life in the wild. If it is not possible to release these poor creatures we should at least try to give them a nearly natural refuge
