Thus the Arboretum of Samboja Lestari will be more species-rich than the famous botanical garden in Bogor on Java. A surface of 159 hectares retains most of the botanical wealth of Borneo. All known tree species of Borneo investigated so far will grow here. At present the Arboretum contains about 750 species.
<media type="image_gallery" title="Bildergalerie" subtitle="">

                     In the aerial photograph, the camp with its water reservoir under construction can be seen. Above left there is a lake, fed by small supplies and rain water. The water is pumped to the reservoir at the camp. From here it can be distributed to the areas of afforestation or the Arboretum (partially visible in the picture).

Nowadays some fruits are harvested in the Arboretum. Here you can see a wild form of the Durian, a fruit appreciated by Indonesians and orangutans alike. It stinks, is thorny and very difficult to open, but also absolutely delicious! By means wild forms are lost as a result of agricultural breeding. In the Arboretum, they are retained and cultivated in the emerging rainforest, for example as food for the animals.

At the moment about 750 tree species re grown in the Arboretum which is however just a small part of the planned 5000. This picture shows future candidates waiting! 210 species are available in the nursery that will be cultivated in the future and then increase the biodiversity

Also Dr. Klaus Ursus Schendel has left a legacy in the guest garden of the Arboretum by planting a tree in June 2002.
